The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Billing and Coding degree completion program is designed for medical office professionals with a certificate or substantial coursework in medical billing and coding. Graduates of SM调教社区College鈥檚 Medical Office Administrative Assistant, Health Unit Coordinator, or previous Medical Billing and Coding programs are also welcome to apply.

Upon successful completion of this Medical Billing and Coding program, you will be able to:

• Analyze how medical records are maintained and managed by medical providers for patients and learn about an EHR system
• Demonstrate how billing gets processed to insurance carriers for reimbursement, including learning how to fill out billing forms
• Analyze healthcare regulations, medical laws and ethics, compliance and auditing in medical coding and billing
• Interpret public and private insurance carriers, including their guidelines and reimbursement processes
• Demonstrate proficiency with Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding (HCPCS) as reporting systems to insurance carriers
• Demonstrate proficiency with International Classifications of Diseases (ICD) as a reporting system to insurance carriers and government agencies
• Determine healthcare reimbursement and payment methodologies provided in various US settings as it relates to relevant forms, processes, practices and the roles of health information professionals
• Audit patient records to ensure completion and accuracy
• Describe the purposes and intents of key federal, state and local health care policies
• Describe medical terminology, including body parts and organ functions that make up the human body systems
• Describe and demonstrate effective supervisory and management skills
• Use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to explore solutions for specific workplace concerns and contemporary issues
• Demonstrate written and oral communication skills in maintaining interpersonal relationships and communicating effectively in a professional office environment

The Associate of Applied Science in Medical Billing and Coding (Degree Completion) program provides you with the knowledge and technical skills you need to find an entry-level position as a Medical Billing and Coder. In classrooms and labs, you will learn how to code medical diagnoses and procedures, maintain medical records, fill out billing forms, and use computer technology to enhance your potential for employment.
